NBA star James Harden was arrested early Saturday morning in Houston, Texas, on a misdemeanor charge of unlawfully carrying a weapon, according to court records and multiple media reports, including TMZ.
The Cleveland Cavaliers guard was reportedly taken into custody at approximately 3:41 a.m. local time after police officers noticed a handgun inside his Mercedes vehicle. Authorities stated that the firearm was in plain sight, positioned in the car’s cup holder rather than secured inside a holster, which led to the charge under Texas law.
According to court documents, Harden admitted to officers that the gun belonged to him. Following the arrest, he was briefly detained at Harris County Jail before being released on a $100 bond.
Harden is scheduled to appear in court on June 22.
As part of the conditions for his release, Harden is prohibited from possessing firearms, ammunition, or any other weapons. He is also required to comply with strict bond conditions, including random urinalysis testing and restrictions on consuming alcohol, marijuana, controlled substances, or other drugs unless prescribed by a doctor.
Reports indicate that Harden had been out with a large group of friends at a hookah lounge in Houston before the incident occurred.
Cavaliers Respond to Arrest
Shortly after news of the arrest became public, the Cleveland Cavaliers issued a brief official statement:
“The Cleveland Cavaliers are aware of the arrest of James Harden this morning and are in the process of gathering additional information. We are in contact with James and his representation and will continue to monitor developments as they become available. At this time, we will have no further comment.”
The organization has not released additional comments since the initial statement.
Difficult Timing for Harden
The arrest comes at a challenging moment in Harden’s career. The Cavaliers were recently eliminated from the Eastern Conference Finals after being swept 4–0 by the New York Knicks.
Harden struggled during the series, and his performances became a major topic of discussion among analysts and fans. During the 2026 playoffs, he averaged 19.2 points, 5.5 assists, and 5.1 rebounds over 18 games, while also committing a relatively high number of turnovers.
Despite the disappointing playoff exit, Harden remained productive throughout the regular season. Across 70 games in the 2025–26 season, he averaged:

He also posted solid shooting splits, hitting 43.4% from the field, 37.5% from three-point range, and 88.4% from the free-throw line.

Harden’s future with the Cavaliers remains uncertain.
The veteran guard holds a player option worth $42.3 million for next season, though only $13.3 million is guaranteed. This means he could decline the option and enter free agency this summer.
Before the arrest, there had been growing speculation regarding whether Harden would remain in Cleveland or explore other opportunities in free agency. Both Harden and Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell had reportedly expressed interest in continuing their partnership after the team’s playoff elimination.
However, this legal issue could complicate offseason negotiations.
